How to Take Care of Your Wood Fence (And What Stain to Use)

wood fence

Your wood fence isn’t just a boundary — it’s part of your home’s curb appeal and protection. At JP Fence, we believe a properly maintained wood fence can last 15–20 years or more, even in the unpredictable Northern Nevada climate. Whether we just installed your new fence or you’re giving your older one a refresh, here’s how to protect your investment.

1. Start With Regular Maintenance

The wind, sun, and snow in our region can be tough on wood. Here’s what to do:

Clean It Once a Year
Use a gentle power wash or a mix of warm water, dish soap, and a soft scrub brush. Remove any dirt, mold, or algae to prevent rot or discoloration.

Inspect for Damage
Look for loose nails, warped boards, or cracked posts. Tighten or replace hardware, and trim vegetation that’s pressing against the fence.

2. Choose the Right Wood Stain

Not all stains are created equal. You’ll want something that enhances the natural beauty of your wood and protects it from harsh weather.

Our Recommendations:

  • Oil-Based Stains: Long-lasting protection and deeper wood penetration. Great for privacy fences.
  • Water-Based Stains: Easier cleanup, faster drying, and lower VOCs. Good for decorative fences.

Trusted Brands:

  • Ready Seal – Excellent for DIY and pro application.
  • Behr Premium – Widely available, great UV resistance.
  • Cabot or Penofin – High-end options for longer-lasting coverage.

3. Pick a Finish: Transparent, Semi-Transparent, or Solid

  • Transparent – Shows off the wood grain but offers minimal UV protection.
  • Semi-Transparent – A balance of color and wood visibility with added protection.
  • Solid Color – Best for hiding imperfections and maximum weatherproofing.

For most fences in the Carson City, Reno, and Tahoe areas, we recommend a semi-transparent or solid stain to block UV rays and slow fading.

4. When Should You Stain?

  • New Fence: Wait 4–6 weeks after installation to allow the wood to dry out.
  • Existing Fence: Re-stain every 2–3 years, or when the color starts fading and water no longer beads on the surface.

What to Avoid

  • Don’t stain wet or freshly pressure-treated wood — it won’t absorb properly.
  • Avoid using paint instead of stain — it can crack and peel, trapping moisture underneath.

Pro Tip from JP Fence

Staining isn't included in our installation, but we strongly recommend it. Not sure where to start? Reach out to your HOA — many have preferred contractors for staining.
